Standard strainers often refer to in-line or wye-type strainers designed for low dirt-loading situations. In contrast, basket strainers utilize a large drop-in basket housing that captures substantial solid debris with minimal restriction to fluid flow. They provide dedicated access covers, enabling operators to remove, inspect, clean, and replace reusable basket elements quickly.

Strainer size corresponds to nominal pipe size of the inlet and outlet process piping connections, such as 6 inches. Sizing also accounts for internal basket dimensions, overall lay length, flange rating, and basket perforation or mesh openings ranging from 20 to 400 mesh to achieve appropriate flow characteristics and filtration level.

Units are offered in cast and fabricated stainless steel housings, including 304, 316, and 316L grades. Materials conform to ASTM material standards, providing structural integrity and corrosion resistance for process water, chilled water, chemical processing, and boiler feedwater installations operating up to 500°F.

Simplex strainers contain a single basket chamber, requiring process shutdown or line bypass during basket cleaning. Duplex strainers incorporate a dual-chamber design with diversion valves, allowing one chamber to isolate for maintenance while continuous flow runs uninterrupted through the active basket chamber.

Depending on housing style and pressure rating, closure mechanisms include quick-opening covers, hand-clamps, yoke closures, and heavy-duty bolted covers. These options provide safe internal sealing with Buna-N, EPDM, PTFE, Viton, or graphite gaskets while allowing rapid maintenance access.
