Stainless Steel Strainer Baskets for Data Center Water Systems

Strainer baskets are supplied across nominal strainer sizes ranging from 2 inches to 24 inches. Basket lengths span from 4 inches to 36 inches, depending on the strainer housing configuration. Perforation openings range from 1/32 inch to 3/4 inch diameter, while woven wire mesh options range from 20 mesh to 200 mesh.

A strainer typically utilizes perforated plate or coarser wire mesh to intercept larger suspended solids upstream of pumps and valves, protecting downstream hardware while maintaining low differential pressure. Mesh filters usually target smaller particle sizes. Strainer baskets combine both designs by utilizing rigid perforated plate backing lined with 20 to 200 woven mesh for fine particle retention.

The ideal fine mesh strainer for process cooling integrates 316 stainless steel woven wire mesh—such as 200 mesh—supported by a heavy-duty perforated metal basket or wire cage. This mesh-lined configuration provides fine particle retention without collapsing under operating differential pressures up to 50 psi, ensuring uninterrupted flow across critical chilled water circuits.

These strainer baskets are fabricated from 316 stainless steel, delivering resistance to corrosion and process fluids. Elements can be supplied in mill, polished, or passivated finishes, supported by reinforced frames, support rings, or wire cages compliant with applicable ASTM material standards.

Routine maintenance and cleaning are recommended when the differential pressure reaches 15 to 20 psi ΔP across the basket, depending on the configuration. The units have a maximum operating differential pressure of up to 50 psi (3.4 bar) and feature a reusable design to minimize consumable replacement costs.

In mission-critical infrastructure, strainer baskets are utilized for pump protection, heat exchanger protection, condenser water loops, cooling tower systems, closed-loop chilled water systems, and boiler feedwater circuits. They capture pipe scale and particulate contaminants before debris reaches sensitive chillers, valves, or meters.
