Industrial Water Strainers for Data Center Cooling & HVAC

A filter strainer is an in-line device designed to mechanically separate suspended solids from fluid streams. In data center cooling and process piping, these units utilize stainless steel perforated screens or woven wire mesh linings. They trap pipe scale, rust, and startup particulates, maintaining clean process fluids while minimizing overall pressure drop throughout continuous chilled water and cooling tower circuits.

The primary distinction between a filter and a strainer lies in the particulate size captured and cleaning design. Strainers are typically cleanable, reusable mechanical devices built with perforated metal or mesh to retain larger suspended solids and scale. Filters frequently employ disposable media designed to capture fine microscopic contaminants, often resulting in higher resistance to fluid flow across the system.

Common types of pipeline strainers include simplex basket strainers, duplex strainers, and temporary cone or basket startup strainers. Simplex designs serve systems where flow can pause for basket servicing. Duplex models incorporate two chambers and a diverter valve for uninterrupted continuous operation. Temporary cone strainers fit between flanges to capture construction debris during system commissioning and flushing.

In commercial and industrial water piping, a water strainer is commonly designated by its mechanical configuration or function, such as a basket strainer, simplex strainer, duplex strainer, or pipe line strainer. Temporary models installed between pipe flanges for line startup and hydrostatic flushing are frequently referred to as temporary cone strainers, basket strainers, or commissioning strainers.

The purpose of a water strainer is to mechanically arrest solid contaminants entrained within water systems before they reach mechanical equipment. In cooling tower loops, condenser lines, and chilled water networks, strainers capture weld slag, sediment, and pipe scale. This protection prevents heat exchanger fouling, protects pump impellers from erosion, and supports steady design flow rates across critical cooling infrastructure.

A T-type strainer is a compact in-line mechanical strainer configured in a T-shaped body profile. Like other basket and inline strainers, it houses a perforated or mesh straining element positioned perpendicular or angled to the main flow path. It separates particulate matter from process fluids while enabling straight-through piping layouts in systems with restricted physical space.
