Water Filter Housing with Bypass for Data Center Cooling Loops

In general plumbing, a whole house water filter system with a bypass uses integrated valving to direct municipal or well water around filter cartridges during cartridge replacement or emergency maintenance. For mission-critical facilities and industrial process loops, this continuous bypass concept is implemented using dual-chamber duplex strainers that ensure cooling water circulates continuously without downtime during cleaning cycles.

Duplex strainers feature dual filtration chambers connected by an integrated diverter mechanism. When one chamber requires servicing, the flow diverter shifts the cooling stream into the clean secondary chamber. This positive isolation creates a built-in bypass, ensuring chilled water or condenser water continues circulating uninterrupted to sensitive equipment while technicians safely clean or replace the offline basket.

Housings offer perforated plate and woven mesh-lined baskets to target specific particulate sizes in closed-loop or process water. Available mesh configurations span from 20 to 400 mesh, alongside perforation sizes ranging from 1/32 inch to 3/4 inch. Selection depends on target filtration fineness, open area requirements, and allowable pressure drop across the active chamber.

Water filter housings and duplex strainers are constructed from heavy-duty 304 stainless steel or 316 stainless steel to resist corrosion in closed-loop and open cooling systems. Internal baskets feature durable 316 stainless steel, with seal options including Buna-N, EPDM, Viton, graphite, and PTFE to suit diverse system operating temperatures and chemical treatment profiles.

Available housing designs accommodate varying operating pressures depending on configuration. Certain compact models support design pressures up to 200 psi, while heavy-duty fabricated industrial duplex strainers can handle operating pressures up to 600 psig. Connection options include threaded NPT ports as well as ANSI Class 125/150 and DIN flanged connections to integrate into standard piping.

Strainer baskets should be cleaned when differential pressure gauges indicate an elevated drop across the active basket. A cleaning differential pressure of 5 to 10 psi ΔP is typically recommended, well below the maximum allowable differential pressure of 50 psi. Regular monitoring helps maintain required flow rates and prevents unnecessary pump strain.
