Simplex Strainer Baskets for Data Center Water Systems

A strainer protects pumps from mechanical damage by capturing solid particles and pipe scale before fluid enters the pump suction. By arresting particulates upstream, strainers safeguard internal impellers, seals, and bearings from abrasion, clogging, and catastrophic wear, thereby maintaining design flow rates and preventing unexpected mechanical downtime within mission-critical circulation loops.

Industrial strainers include simplex basket strainers, duplex strainers, and cone or temporary strainers. Basket strainers utilize perforated or woven mesh-lined internal elements to retain solids while maintaining generous open area ratios. Different configurations offer bolted, yoke, or quick-opening covers and threaded or flanged connections to match diverse process pressure, temperature, and piping requirements.

Simplex strainer baskets are available with perforation diameters ranging from 1/32 inch up to 3/4 inch, as well as woven mesh liners from 20 to 400 mesh. Baskets provide open area ratios between 20% and 60%, allowing facility engineers to balance particulate retention against pressure drop across chilled water and condenser water systems.

Simplex baskets are constructed from 316 stainless steel with options for mill, polished, or passivated finishes, and are paired with 304 or 316 stainless steel housings. Elastomeric seal options include Buna-N, EPDM, PTFE, and Viton to provide reliable fluid containment across diverse operating temperatures and chemical environments in closed-loop systems.

Depending on the specific configuration and model, recommended cleaning differential pressure ranges from 5 to 10 psi delta P for standard simplex strainers, or 15 to 20 psi delta P for reinforced basket elements. Operating differential pressure can reach up to 50 psi, indicating when maintenance is required to restore flow capacity.

Depending on the selected housing and configuration, simplex strainers support maximum operating pressures up to 200 psig or 200 psi (13.8 bar), while heavy-duty basket assemblies can handle operating pressures up to 600 PSIG. Available connection styles include NPT threaded, ANSI Class 125/150, and DIN flanged configurations.
