A sediment filter mechanically captures solid particulates such as dirt, suspended silt, rust, and pipe scale using porous media like polypropylene felt, mesh, or pleated membranes. In contrast, an activated carbon or charcoal filter utilizes chemical adsorption to remove dissolved organic contaminants, chlorine, tastes, and odors. Sediment filters often serve as pre-filtration to prevent particulate matter from fouling downstream equipment.

Sediment filter housings are manufactured in 304L and 316/316L stainless steel, as well as non-metallic fiberglass options for high flow cartridge systems. Stainless steel constructions offer broad chemical compatibility and corrosion resistance in industrial cooling applications, while multi-bag and single-bag vessels support operational pressures up to 150 psi depending on the specific model and closure configuration chosen.

Bag filters provide simple solids capture with single-bag flows up to 176 GPM and multi-bag arrangements handling up to 4,200 GPM. High flow cartridge filters use an oversized pleated design delivering high dirt-holding capacity in a compact vessel footprint. Cartridges suit fine particulate capture down to 0.5 microns, whereas bag filters offer robust retention from coarse mesh down to 1 micron.

To streamline element changeouts and minimize routine maintenance downtime, bag and cartridge filter housings feature several closure configurations. Single-bag vessels offer V-clamp, band clamp, or swing-bolt styles, while multi-bag vessels provide clamp, swing-bolt, davit-assisted, or quick-opening lids. These designs allow operators quick access to internal baskets and filter elements without requiring specialized heavy machinery.

Sediment filtration media provides flexible particle retention across various stages of water treatment. High flow pleated polypropylene cartridges offer ratings between 0.5 and 100 microns. Felt filter bags provide depth filtration across 1 to 200 microns with efficiencies up to 99 percent, while mesh filter bags provide surface filtration covering 1 to 1500 microns for coarse straining.
