Water Strainer Filters for Data Center Cooling & HVAC

A water strainer is a closed-vessel device designed to separate solid particulate from liquid lines using a perforated screen, mesh basket, or conical element. In data center and HVAC systems, water strainers capture pipe scale, weld slag, and suspended debris, preventing blockages in heat exchangers, chillers, and cooling tower loops to sustain continuous, reliable thermal management.

While our products are engineered for commercial, industrial, and data center cooling systems, home applications typically require small inline mesh strainers or standard residential sediment cartridge filters. Commercial installations rely on heavy-duty stainless steel simplex or duplex housings designed for higher flow rates, continuous industrial duty, and pressure demands far exceeding standard residential household plumbing requirements.

The primary purpose of a strainer is coarse filtration and equipment protection. Positioned upstream of pumps, heat exchangers, and fine filters, strainers capture larger particulate contaminants that would otherwise damage mechanical seals, erode impellers, or prematurely blind fine filter bags and cartridges. This extends the service life of downstream components and reduces maintenance downtime across critical cooling loops.

Duplex strainers are selected when liquid flow cannot be shut down for routine maintenance. Featuring a dual-chamber design with a manual diverter, duplex units isolate one basket for cleaning while the other remains active in the cooling loop. Simplex strainers require flow interruption, making duplex configurations essential for continuous mission-critical cooling environments such as data center operations.

Strainer baskets are constructed from durable metallic materials, including 316 stainless steel with options for perforated plate or woven wire mesh. Select configurations offer mesh lining ranging from 20 to 400 mesh, supported by rigid frames or cages. This metal construction delivers high mechanical strength, corrosion resistance, and reusable service through repeated cleaning cycles in demanding industrial water environments.

For simplex and duplex basket strainers, the recommended cleaning differential pressure is typically between 5 and 10 psi delta-P, depending on the configuration. Temporary cone strainers generally recommend change-out at 15 to 20 psi delta-P. Monitoring differential pressure across the housing ensures debris accumulation does not restrict flow capacity or stress upstream pumps and piping systems.
