Pipeline Strainers for Data Center Cooling Water Lines

In an HVAC system, a pipeline strainer protects critical heat-transfer equipment within chilled water, condenser water, and cooling tower loops. By removing scale, rust, and particulate matter before it reaches chillers or cooling coils, the strainer maintains heat exchange efficiency, prevents clogging in piping circuits, and minimizes unplanned system maintenance.

A duplex strainer is ideal for continuous-duty lines where cooling flow cannot be interrupted for routine maintenance. Its dual-chamber design features an integrated diverter valve that routes flow through one chamber while isolating the other for basket cleaning, unlike simplex strainers which require flow shutdown or bypass diversion during servicing.

Housings and baskets are constructed from 304 and 316 stainless steel to deliver corrosion resistance in industrial and process water service. Available basket sealing options include Buna-N, EPDM, PTFE, and Viton to handle various operating fluid specifications and temperature requirements.

Temporary cone strainers are installed directly between pipe flanges during facility startup, flushing, pre-commissioning, and hydrostatic testing. Their conical profile captures construction debris, pipe scale, and foreign matter to protect downstream pumps and heat exchangers, after which they can be easily removed once flushing is complete.

Strainers are supplied with perforated plate baskets ranging from 1/32 inch to 3/4 inch perforations, or lined with woven wire mesh from 20 to 400 mesh. This allows system designers to balance required particle retention against system flow capacity and differential pressure limits.

Depending on the selected strainer model, documentation can include compliance with ASME B16.5 flange dimensions, ASTM A351 material specifications, dimensional inspection records, pressure test reports, material traceability, and ABS Type Approval for verified structural integrity.
