Basket Strainers for Pumps - Data Center & Industrial Applications

A pump strainer is an inline filtration device installed upstream of pumps to capture solid debris and particulates before they enter the pump housing. By capturing foreign matter, pump strainers protect impellers, mechanical seals, and downstream equipment from abrasion, clogs, and mechanical failure, ensuring reliable fluid handling in cooling loops, feedwater systems, and process water applications.

The purpose of a basket strainer is to mechanically filter out solids from liquid piping systems using a removable perforated or mesh-lined basket. In data centers and industrial plants, basket strainers safeguard pumps, heat exchangers, valves, and chillers by catching contaminants. They offer high open-area ratios for efficient pressure drop management and allow easy basket removal for cleaning.

Simplex basket strainers utilize a single filtration basket and require process shutdown or line isolation for basket servicing and debris removal. Duplex basket strainers contain two separate basket chambers connected by a flow diverter valve. When one chamber fills with debris, flow is switched to the clean chamber, allowing continuous, uninterrupted filtration during maintenance in critical cooling or process systems.

Strainer baskets are manufactured from 316 stainless steel with perforated plate, woven wire mesh, or pleated configurations. Standard perforations range from 1/32 to 3/4 inch, while mesh options range from 20 to 400 mesh for precise particle retention. Compatible seal materials include Buna-N, EPDM, PTFE, and Viton to handle diverse fluid conditions.

Pump basket strainers should be cleaned when the differential pressure across the housing rises above baseline operating levels. Depending on the model and configuration, recommended cleaning differential pressure is typically 5 to 10 psi ΔP or 15 to 20 psi ΔP. Quick-opening, hand-clamp, or bolted covers allow maintenance personnel to quickly remove, clean, and reinstall the reusable baskets.

Operating capabilities depend on the specific housing configuration, materials, and seals selected. Simplex and duplex models support maximum operating pressures up to 200 psig or up to 600 psig. Maximum operating temperatures range up to 500°F (260°C) for high-temperature stainless steel configurations, or lower thresholds like 100°F to 150°F depending on elastomer seals and connection designs.
